Living with LMNA-related cardiocutaneous progeria syndrome

A rare inherited condition that affects the skin and heart and gives a prematurely aged appearance starting in adulthood.

Understanding LMNA-related cardiocutaneous progeria syndrome

LMNA-related cardiocutaneous progeria syndrome is a rare genetic premature aging syndrome that affects the skin and heart.

Skin changes begin in adulthood and cause a prematurely aged look: thinning and graying of scalp hair, loss of fat under the skin, and tight skin. Heart and blood vessel changes are prominent. Eyebrows and eyelashes are lost in childhood, and there is a tendency to develop cancers.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Loss of eyebrows and eyelashes
  • Hair loss (alopecia universalis)
  • Thinning and graying scalp hair
  • Hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis)
  • Skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma)
  • Bleeding inside the skull

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists, heart and blood vessel specialists and skin, hair, and nail specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in LMNA are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

LMNA Cardiac Diseases Network may keep lists of experts for this condition.
