Living with Liposarcoma

A cancerous tumor that starts in fat tissue, often in the thigh, leg, or belly.

Understanding Liposarcoma

Liposarcoma is a tumor that arises from fat tissue and is considered malignant (cancerous).

It often occurs in the thigh, leg, behind the knee, or in the abdomen, and less often in the head and neck. Most people have no symptoms until the tumor is large and presses on nearby tissues or organs, causing tenderness, pain, or problems with function. It can occur at any time in life.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Firm lump under the skin
  • Tenderness or pain once the tumor is large
  • Problems with function of nearby organs or tissues

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include cancer specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Sarcoma Foundation of America may keep lists of experts for this condition.
