Living with Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy

A group of inherited muscle diseases that weaken the muscles of the shoulders, upper arms, hips, and thighs.

Understanding Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy

Limb-girdle muscular dystrophies are a group of diseases that cause muscle weakness (myopathy) and wasting (atrophy).

The muscles closest to the center of the body are most affected, especially the shoulders, upper arms, hips, and thighs. Symptoms may appear as early as childhood and typically worsen over time. Severity and age of onset vary, even within a family.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD describes these early signs:

  • Muscle weakness in shoulders, upper arms, hips, thighs
  • Muscle wasting
  • Waddling walk or walking on the balls of the feet
  • Enlarged calf muscles
  • Trouble running

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Muscular Dystrophy Association and The Speak Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
