Living with Leukoencephalopathy with brain stem and spinal cord involvement-high lactate syndrome

A progressive inherited condition of the brain and spinal cord that causes stiffness, balance problems, and trouble sensing limb position.

Understanding Leukoencephalopathy with brain stem and spinal cord involvement-high lactate syndrome

Leukoencephalopathy with brain stem and spinal cord involvement-high lactate syndrome (LBSL) is a progressive condition that affects the brain and spinal cord.

Movement problems usually begin in childhood or adolescence, though sometimes not until adulthood. People have muscle stiffness, trouble coordinating movement, and loss of position and vibration sense, affecting the legs more than the arms. Many eventually use a wheelchair. Some are very vulnerable to complications after minor head injury.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Trouble with walking (gait problems)
  • Muscle stiffness (spasticity)
  • Poor coordination (ataxia)
  • Clumsiness
  • Speech difficulties (dysarthria)
  • Loss of position and vibration sense

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in DARS2 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

United Leukodystrophy Foundation, United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation and MitoAction may keep lists of experts for this condition.
