Living with Legg-Calve-Perthes disease

A childhood hip condition in which the ball of the thighbone loses its blood supply, causing limping and hip pain.

Understanding Legg-Calve-Perthes disease

Legg-Calve-Perthes disease is a hip condition in which blood supply to the ball of the thighbone (femoral head) is cut off, so bone cells die.

It usually starts in childhood. Early symptoms may include limping, pain in the hip, thigh, or knee, and less hip movement. Later, one leg may be longer than the other and muscles around the hip may waste away. Some people develop arthritis as adults.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Limping
  • Joint pain in the hip, thigh, or knee
  • Reduced hip movement
  • Death of bone from poor blood supply (avascular necrosis)
  • Muscle wasting around the hip
  • One leg longer than the other

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include autoimmune and inflammatory disease specialists, bone and joint specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in COL2A1 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
