Living with Kapur-Toriello syndrome

An extremely rare genetic condition with distinctive facial features, severe intellectual disability, heart and intestinal differences, and slow growth.

Understanding Kapur-Toriello syndrome

Kapur-Toriello syndrome is an extremely rare genetic syndrome with facial differences, severe intellectual disability, and slow growth.

People can also have heart and intestinal differences. Eye differences such as small eyes and colobomas, a cleft in the mouth, and low-set ears are listed. It is noticed in newborns and infants.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Intellectual disability
  • Slow growth and weight gain
  • Small eyes (microphthalmia)
  • Gaps in the eye (coloboma)
  • Cleft lip or palate
  • Intestinal malrotation

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, ear, nose, and throat specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

World Craniofacial Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
