Living with Kallmann syndrome-heart disease syndrome
A rare genetic condition with a missing sense of smell, delayed puberty from low hormones, and complex heart differences.
Understanding Kallmann syndrome-heart disease syndrome
The body lacks the hormone GnRH, so puberty is delayed. People have a reduced or missing sense of smell, with small or missing smell nerves (olfactory bulbs). They also have complex heart differences from birth. GARD says it is a distinct condition from Kallmann syndrome. It is noticed in newborns and infants.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Low sex hormones (hypogonadotropic hypogonadism)
- Reduced or missing sense of smell
- Delayed puberty
- Heart differences such as double outlet right ventricle
- Bluish skin color (cyanosis)
- Cleft palate
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
