Living with Juvenile temporal arteritis
A rare condition in which a blood vessel at the temple becomes inflamed, often causing only a painless lump.
Understanding Juvenile temporal arteritis
It is usually found in late childhood or early adulthood. Many people have no symptoms other than a painless lump in the temple area. Unlike the classic form of temporal arteritis, it affects only the temporal arteries. It usually occurs by chance in people with no family history.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Painless lump (nodule) at the temple
- Headache
- Raised white blood cell count
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
Diagnosis
- 1Talk with your doctor
Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.
- 2See a specialist
Specialists who may be involved include autoimmune and inflammatory disease specialists.
- 3Ask which tests can help
Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
- 4Connect with expert centers
