Understanding ITP

ITP lowers your platelet count. Platelets help your blood clot and stop bleeding.

Your immune system may destroy platelets, and your body may make fewer. ITP can be short term or last a year or longer.

Signs & symptoms

Some people have no symptoms.

  • Easy bruising or tiny red spots
  • Nosebleeds or bleeding gums
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Blood in urine or stool
  • Tiredness

Tell your care team about new or changing symptoms.

Diagnosis

  1. Review symptoms and medical history

A clinician reviews your symptoms, medical history and family history.

  2. Check platelet levels with blood tests

Blood tests can include a complete blood count to measure platelets and a blood smear to examine blood cells.

  3. Check for other causes when needed

Other tests may help check for related conditions or other causes.
