Living with Invasive non-typhoidal salmonellosis
A bacterial infection in which Salmonella spreads outside the gut, seen in people who also have HIV, malaria, or cancer.
Understanding Invasive non-typhoidal salmonellosis
It is caused by certain types of Salmonella enterica (non-typhoidal types). It happens in people who already have HIV, malaria, or a cancer (malignancy). People usually have fever, pale skin, and breathing signs such as cough and pneumonia. Stomach and bowel symptoms are not common. Sometimes abscesses in organs, septic shock, or meningitis occur. It can start at any time in life.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD says people typically have:
- Fever
- Pale skin (pallor)
- Cough
- Fast breathing (tachypnea)
- Pneumonia
- Organ abscesses (sometimes)
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
