Living with Infertility associated with multi-tailed spermatozoa and excessive DNA

A condition affecting only males, with large, misshapen sperm with multiple tails that cause infertility.

Understanding Infertility associated with multi-tailed spermatozoa and excessive DNA

Infertility associated with multi-tailed spermatozoa and excessive DNA, also called macrozoospermia, affects only males and causes infertility.

Almost all sperm cells have abnormally large, misshapen heads with extra chromosomes, usually four copies of each instead of one. They usually have multiple tails, most often four. Because of the extra genetic material, these sperm are unable to lead to a healthy pregnancy.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Infertility in males
  • Sperm with large, misshapen heads (macrozoospermia)
  • Sperm with several tails

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists and urinary and male reproductive system specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in AURKC are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Resolve: The National Infertility Association may keep lists of experts for this condition.
