Living with Infantile cerebral and cerebellar atrophy with postnatal progressive microcephaly

A rare brain condition in which the head grows slowly after birth, with serious delays and seizures.

Understanding Infantile cerebral and cerebellar atrophy with postnatal progressive microcephaly

Infantile cerebral and cerebellar atrophy with postnatal progressive microcephaly is a rare brain condition with a head that grows slowly after birth.

It brings very delayed movement skills and intellectual disability, with stiff, tight muscles and seizures. Brain scans show shrinking of the brain (cerebral and cerebellar atrophy) and poor myelin (nerve covering) development. It begins in infancy.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Global developmental delay
  • Feeding difficulties
  • Poor weight gain (failure to thrive)
  • Brain shrinkage seen on scans
  • Delayed myelination (nerve covering)
  • Muscle jerking (clonus)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in MED17 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
