Living with Idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis
A rare lung disease with repeated bleeding into the lungs, which can cause anemia and lung scarring.
Understanding Idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis
The body removes most of the blood but leaves iron behind, which over time can scar the lungs (fibrosis). It can cause anemia and lung disease. Symptoms can look like pneumonia. It often begins in childhood.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Cough
- Coughing up blood (hemoptysis)
- Tiredness (fatigue)
- Low iron anemia
- Pale skin
- Enlarged liver and spleen
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
Diagnosis
- 1Talk with your doctor
Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.
- 2See a specialist
Specialists who may be involved include lung and breathing specialists.
- 3Ask which tests can help
Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
- 4Connect with expert centers
Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation and Children's Interstitial Lung Disease Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
