Living with Ichthyosis

A group of skin conditions that cause visible scaling and thickened skin over most of the body.

Understanding Ichthyosis

Ichthyosis is a group of skin conditions called disorders of cornification, with visible scaling or thickened skin over most or all of the body.

Inherited forms are caused by changes in many different genes that help skin cells mature and keep the skin barrier working. Ichthyosis can also be acquired later in life with certain autoimmune, inflammatory, metabolic, hormone, or infectious diseases, or with some cancers.

Signs & symptoms

GARD doesn't list specific symptoms for this condition yet. Its summary describes:

  • Visible scaling of the skin
  • Thickened skin (hyperkeratosis)
  • Changes that cover most or all of the skin

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include skin, hair, and nail specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types may keep lists of experts for this condition.
