Living with Hypomyelination with brain stem and spinal cord involvement and leg spasticity
A condition of the brain and spinal cord with leg stiffness that worsens over time, starting in infancy or sometimes adolescence.
Understanding Hypomyelination with brain stem and spinal cord involvement and leg spasticity
The nervous system has a reduced ability to form myelin, the coating on nerve fibers. Early motor skills such as rolling and sitting may be typical. Movement problems usually begin in the first year, though sometimes not until adolescence. The key feature is leg stiffness (spasticity) that worsens. Most people cannot walk independently. Others can have fast eye movements, low trunk muscle tone, and mild intellectual disability.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Leg stiffness (spasticity)
- Delayed motor skills
- Poor coordination (ataxia)
- Fast eye movements (nystagmus)
- Speech difficulty (dysarthria)
- Mild intellectual disability
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
Diagnosis
- 1Talk with your doctor
Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.
- 2See a specialist
Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.
- 3Consider genetic testing
Changes in DARS1 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
- 4Connect with expert centers
United Leukodystrophy Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
