Living with Hypomyelinating leukodystrophy 9

A rare genetic brain condition with developmental delay, muscle stiffness, and unsteady movements starting in infancy.

Understanding Hypomyelinating leukodystrophy 9

Hypomyelinating leukodystrophy 9 is a rare genetic condition of the brain's white matter that begins in newborns and infants.

People have developmental delay, increased muscle tone that later becomes spasticity, mild poor coordination, fast eye movements, speech difficulty, tremor, and mild intellectual disability. Brain imaging shows too little myelin (hypomyelination).

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Global developmental delay
  • Poor coordination (ataxia)
  • Muscle stiffness (spasticity)
  • Fast eye movements (nystagmus)
  • Speech difficulty (dysarthria)
  • Intention tremor

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in RARS1 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

United Leukodystrophy Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
