Living with Huntington disease-like 3

A rare genetic brain condition that starts in childhood, with worsening movement, speech, and thinking problems.

Understanding Huntington disease-like 3

Huntington disease-like 3 is a rare condition with progressive brain and movement changes that start in childhood.

It resembles Huntington disease. Children have worsening movement problems, such as involuntary movements (chorea), muscle stiffness (dystonia), poor coordination, and unsteady walking. Seizures and loss of speech can occur. Brain MRI shows shrinking in the front of the brain and in a deep area called the caudate.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Involuntary movements (chorea)
  • Muscle spasms and stiffness (dystonia, spasticity)
  • Speech changes and loss of speech (mutism)
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Behavior changes
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
