Living with Hoyeraal-Hreidarsson syndrome

A rare genetic condition, a severe form of dyskeratosis congenita, affecting growth, the brain, immune system, and blood.

Understanding Hoyeraal-Hreidarsson syndrome

Hoyeraal-Hreidarsson syndrome is a rare genetic condition considered a severe variant of dyskeratosis congenita.

It involves slow growth before birth, a small head, a small cerebellum (balance part of the brain), and a weakened immune system. It also involves aplastic anemia, when the bone marrow does not make enough blood cells. Intellectual disability is part of the condition. It is seen in newborns and infants.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Small head (microcephaly)
  • Weakened immune system
  • Low red blood cells (anemia)
  • Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia)
  • Global developmental delay
  • Poor nail formation (nail dystrophy)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include allergy and immune system specialists, blood and bone marrow specialists, brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Immune Deficiency Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
