Living with Hereditary spastic paraplegia 5A

A pure or complex type of hereditary spastic paraplegia with slowly worsening leg stiffness, starting in childhood to adulthood.

Understanding Hereditary spastic paraplegia 5A

Hereditary spastic paraplegia 5A is a form of hereditary spastic paraplegia with slowly worsening stiffness in the legs.

In the pure form there are also bladder problems and high arches (pes cavus). In the complex form there can be balance problems, rapid eye movements, muscle wasting, and thinking changes. Age at onset varies widely, from early childhood to adulthood. MRI may show shrinking of the cerebellum and spinal cord in some people.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Stiff legs (spastic paraplegia)
  • Leg weakness and wasting
  • High-arched feet (pes cavus)
  • Ankle clonus
  • Reduced vibration sense
  • Bladder problems

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in CYP7B1 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Spastic Paraplegia Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
