A complex type of hereditary spastic paraplegia with leg stiffness and nerve damage, starting in the teens or adulthood.

Understanding Hereditary spastic paraplegia 36

Hereditary spastic paraplegia 36 is a complex form of hereditary spastic paraplegia with slowly worsening leg stiffness and nerve damage.

Stiffness and weakness in the legs come with a spastic walk, high arches (pes cavus), and urinary urgency. It also includes peripheral sensorimotor neuropathy, which is damage to nerves that carry feeling and movement signals. It starts in the teen years or adulthood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Stiff legs (spasticity)
  • Spastic walk
  • Brisk reflexes
  • Urinary urgency or loss of bladder control
  • Reduced touch and vibration sense in hands and feet
  • Weakness in the arms, legs, hands, and feet

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
