Hereditary spastic paraplegia 31 is a rare type of hereditary spastic paraplegia, usually with weakness in the upper legs and a spastic walk.

It most often begins either in childhood or in adulthood after age 30. Some people have more features, such as nerve damage, trouble speaking and swallowing, wasting of hand or foot muscles, and reduced vibration sense.

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Stiff legs (spasticity)
  • Spastic walk
  • Weakness in the upper legs
  • Brisk reflexes
  • High-arched feet (pes cavus)
  • Trouble running

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
