Living with Hereditary spastic paraplegia 23

A rare, complex type of hereditary spastic paraplegia with leg stiffness, skin color changes, and early graying of hair.

Understanding Hereditary spastic paraplegia 23

Hereditary spastic paraplegia 23 (SPG23) is a rare, complex type of hereditary spastic paraplegia that starts in childhood.

Along with worsening leg stiffness, people have nerve damage, skin color changes (vitiligo, darker areas, freckle-like spots), early graying of the hair, and a thin face with sharp features.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Stiff legs (spastic paraplegia)
  • Spastic walk
  • Patchy loss of skin color (vitiligo)
  • Freckle-like spots (lentigines)
  • Curved spine (kyphoscoliosis)
  • Bowel urgency or control problems

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in DSTYK are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Spastic Paraplegia Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
