Living with Hereditary sensory neuropathy-deafness-dementia syndrome

An inherited nerve condition with hearing loss, memory and thinking decline, and loss of feeling in the feet and legs.

Understanding Hereditary sensory neuropathy-deafness-dementia syndrome

Hereditary sensory neuropathy-deafness-dementia syndrome (HSAN IE) is an inherited condition of the nervous system with three main features.

The features are hearing loss, a decline in thinking skills (dementia), and worsening loss of feeling in the feet and legs. Hearing loss gets worse over time and often becomes moderate to severe between ages 20 and 35. Dementia typically starts in the thirties, sometimes after personality changes. Loss of feeling usually begins in adolescence or early adulthood. Some have seizures and sleep problems. It starts in the teen years or adulthood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Hearing loss
  • Loss of feeling in the feet and legs
  • Decline in memory and thinking (dementia)
  • Personality changes
  • Trouble walking
  • Seizures and sleep problems

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, ear, nose, and throat specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in DNMT1 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation Inc. and The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy may keep lists of experts for this condition.
