Living with Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type 2
An inherited nerve condition in which the ability to feel pain and temperature is lost, starting in infancy or early childhood.
Understanding Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type 2
It usually starts in infancy or early childhood with numbness in the hands and feet, followed by the loss of pain and temperature sensing. Unnoticed injuries can lead to open sores, infections, and joint damage (Charcot joints). People may injure themselves by biting the tongue, lips, or fingers. Effects on the automatic nervous system vary.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Numbness in the hands and feet
- Loss of pain and temperature sense
- Sores on the hands and feet
- Excessive sweating
- Bone and joint changes
- Poorly formed fingernails and toenails
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Quick facts
GARD says changes in genes (also called variants) cause this condition. It is autosomal recessive, so a child inherits a changed copy of the gene from each parent.
