Living with Hereditary pancreatitis

An inherited condition with repeated bouts of pancreas inflammation, starting in childhood or the teen years.

Understanding Hereditary pancreatitis

Hereditary pancreatitis is a genetic condition with repeated episodes of inflammation of the pancreas.

The pancreas makes digestive enzymes and insulin. Symptoms usually start in late childhood with an acute attack of belly pain, fever, nausea, or vomiting lasting one to three days. Repeated attacks can lead to chronic pancreatitis, usually by early adulthood, with ongoing pain, gas, and bloating. Over time scarring can reduce pancreas function.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Belly pain
  • Repeated pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever
  • Gas and bloating
  • Fatty stools in later disease

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include digestive system specialists, genetic specialists and hormone specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

National Pancreas Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
