Living with Hereditary arginine vasopressin deficiency

A water-balance condition that causes lots of urine and thirst because the body lacks a hormone.

Understanding Hereditary arginine vasopressin deficiency

Hereditary arginine vasopressin deficiency is a condition of water balance in which the body makes too much urine and loses water.

This leads to extreme thirst. People can quickly become dehydrated if they do not drink enough, which can cause dizziness and tiredness and high blood sodium. Repeated dehydration can cause long-term problems, especially in children. The familial form is caused by gene changes, usually shows in childhood, and worsens over time. It is different from diabetes mellitus.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Extreme thirst (polydipsia)
  • Passing lots of urine (polyuria)
  • Irritability
  • Tiredness (lethargy)
  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Slow growth

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists and hormone specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in AVP are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Pituitary Network Association may keep lists of experts for this condition.
