Living with Heart defects-limb shortening syndrome

A rare syndrome present at birth with short limbs, spine bone differences, and heart defects.

Understanding Heart defects-limb shortening syndrome

Heart defects-limb shortening syndrome is a rare syndrome with a skeletal dysplasia, short limbs, and heart defects.

The bone differences include clefts in the spine bones (coronal clefting of the vertebral bodies) and short limbs. Heart defects vary and can include holes in the heart walls, an underdeveloped right ventricle, and valve defects. GARD says there have been no further descriptions in the literature since 1990. It is noticed in the newborn period.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Short limbs and short stature
  • Differences in the spine bones
  • Hole between upper heart chambers (atrial septal defect)
  • Hole between lower heart chambers (ventricular septal defect)
  • Heart valve differences
  • Rib differences

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include bone and joint specialists, genetic specialists and heart and blood vessel specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
