Understanding Haim-Munk syndrome
Features include thick palms and soles (palmoplantar hyperkeratosis), severe early gum disease (periodontitis), thick curved nails, flat feet, long slender fingers (arachnodactyly), and bone loss at the fingertips (acroosteolysis). It usually begins in infancy or childhood.

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Thickened skin on the palms and soles
- Severe gum disease (periodontitis)
- Cavities
- Thick nails
- Long, slender fingers
- Flat feet
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
Diagnosis
- 1Talk with your doctor
Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.
- 2See a specialist
Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists, gum, teeth and mouth specialists and skin, hair, and nail specialists.
- 3Consider genetic testing
Changes in CTSC are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
