Living with Guillain-Barre syndrome

An autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord, causing muscle weakness and changes in feeling.

Understanding Guillain-Barre syndrome

Guillain-Barré syndrome is an autoimmune disorder that affects the nerves.

In autoimmune disorders the immune system attacks the body's own tissues. Here, the immune response damages the peripheral nerves, which connect the brain and spinal cord to the limbs and organs. It can affect nerves that control movement (motor), nerves that sense pain, temperature, and touch (sensory), or both. There are several types. The most common is acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP), in which the immune system damages myelin, the protective covering on nerve fibers. It can occur at any time in life.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD describes these:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Paralysis
  • Loss of the ability to feel some sensations
  • Changes in heart rhythm (arrhythmia)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Autoimmune Association, GBS/CIDP Foundation International and Global Autoimmune Institute may keep lists of experts for this condition.
