Living with Glucocorticoid-remediable aldosteronism

An inherited condition in which the adrenal glands make too much aldosterone, causing high blood pressure.

Understanding Glucocorticoid-remediable aldosteronism

Glucocorticoid-remediable aldosteronism, or familial hyperaldosteronism type I, is an inherited form of too much aldosterone.

Aldosterone is a hormone made by the adrenal glands that helps the body keep water and sodium and get rid of potassium. People with this condition are also at increased risk for a type of stroke called hemorrhagic stroke. It usually shows up from childhood to adulthood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Abnormal renin levels
  • Enlarged adrenal glands

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists, hormone specialists and kidney specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in CYP11B1 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Primary Aldosteronism Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
