Living with Galloway-Mowat syndrome

A rare nervous system condition that involves a small head, developmental delay, seizures, and kidney problems.

Understanding Galloway-Mowat syndrome

Galloway-Mowat syndrome is a rare, neurodegenerative disorder with developmental and physical differences.

Signs may include a small head size (microcephaly), developmental delay, seizures, kidney disease (nephrotic syndrome), hiatal hernia, optic atrophy, movement disorders, and intellectual disability. Other physical differences may also be present. Symptoms may begin from birth through childhood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Small head size (microcephaly)
  • Delays in overall development
  • Seizures
  • Kidney problems, including nephrotic syndrome
  • Short stature
  • Hiatal hernia (stomach pushes up into the chest)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, genetic specialists and kidney specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
