Living with Familial hypoparathyroidism

A group of inherited conditions where the parathyroid glands make too little hormone, causing low blood calcium.

Understanding Familial hypoparathyroidism

Familial hypoparathyroidism is a rare group of inherited conditions in which low parathyroid hormone (PTH) causes low blood calcium.

These conditions affect how the body handles calcium. They do not come with other hormone problems or developmental defects. They can start at any time in life.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Muscle spasms and muscle weakness
  • Seizures
  • Irregular heart rate (arrhythmia)
  • Clouding of the eye lens (cataract)
  • Abnormal tooth enamel and late teeth coming in
  • Calcium deposits in the brain

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include eye disease specialists, genetic specialists and hormone specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
