Living with Essential thrombocythemia

A blood condition with too many platelets, which can cause blood clots and sometimes bleeding.

Understanding Essential thrombocythemia

Essential thrombocythemia is a condition with too many platelets, the blood cells that help blood clot.

Some people have no symptoms. Others have problems from the extra platelets, most often abnormal blood clots (thrombosis). Clots can lead to strokes, leg pain or swelling, or clots in the lungs. Bleeding, such as nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or gut bleeding, can occur when platelet counts are very high. It can appear at any time in life.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • High platelet count
  • Blood clots in arteries or veins
  • Headache
  • Enlarged spleen
  • Bleeding or bruising easily
  • Burning or tingling feeling in the skin

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include blood and bone marrow specialists and cancer specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
