Understanding Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, periodontitis type

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, periodontitis type, is a rare form of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome that includes severe gum disease beginning in childhood or the teen years.

Main features are severe periodontitis (gum disease) that is hard to treat, a lack of firm gum tissue (attached gingiva), and raised plaques on the shins. People may also bruise easily, have very flexible fingers and toes, stretchy and fragile skin, abnormal scars, and repeated infections. It begins in childhood.

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Severe gum disease (periodontitis)
  • Early tooth loss and missing adult teeth
  • Very flexible joints
  • Stretchy, fragile skin
  • Sunken scars
  • Short height

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
