Living with Early-onset generalized limb-onset dystonia

An inherited dystonia that usually begins in an arm or leg in childhood or the teens and may spread, without affecting intelligence.

Understanding Early-onset generalized limb-onset dystonia

Early-onset generalized limb-onset dystonia, also called early-onset isolated dystonia, is a form of dystonia that causes involuntary muscle tensing and twisting, usually starting in an arm or leg.

Isolated means it occurs without seizures, loss of intellectual function, or developmental delay. It does not affect intelligence. Symptoms usually start in mid-childhood or the teen years, often with muscle spasms in an arm or leg during a specific action such as writing or walking. In some people it spreads and can occur at rest. It usually does not cause pain. Severity varies, even within a family.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Muscle spasms in an arm or leg
  • Twisting or unusual postures
  • Writer's cramp
  • Changes in walking
  • Tremors
  • Voice changes

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in TOR1A are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Dystonia Medical Research Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
