Living with Double outlet left ventricle

An extremely rare heart condition present at birth in which both main arteries come mostly from the heart's left lower chamber.

Understanding Double outlet left ventricle

Double outlet left ventricle is an extremely rare heart condition present at birth in which both the aorta and pulmonary artery arise mostly from the left ventricle.

In a typical heart, the two large arteries come from different pumping chambers. In this condition, both come mostly from the left lower chamber (left ventricle). Signs show up in the newborn and infant years.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Blue-tinted skin (cyanosis)
  • Enlarged heart
  • Hole between lower heart chambers (ventricular septal defect)
  • Open duct near the heart (patent ductus arteriosus)
  • Abnormal path of the heart's own arteries
  • Tricuspid valve missing or closed (atresia)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include heart and blood vessel specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
