Living with Distal trisomy 9q

A rare chromosome condition with delays in speech and development, low muscle tone, and differences in the face, hands, and feet.

Understanding Distal trisomy 9q

Distal trisomy 9q is a rare condition caused by an extra piece of the long arm of chromosome 9.

People with this condition mostly have delays in movement and speech, intellectual disability, and low muscle tone. They may have a long, narrow body build and distinct facial features, including small or deep-set eyes. Hand and foot differences, such as long fingers and bent fingers, can occur. Tight joints and limited joint movement have also been observed. Signs begin during pregnancy or in the newborn period.

Signs & symptoms

GARD doesn't list specific symptoms for this condition separately, but the summary describes these features:

  • Delays in movement and speech
  • Intellectual disability
  • Low muscle tone (hypotonia)
  • Distinct facial features
  • Long or bent fingers
  • Tight joints with limited movement

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
