Living with Distal monosomy 7q36
A rare chromosome condition with a wide range of effects on brain development, growth, the face, and other body parts.
Understanding Distal monosomy 7q36
Effects vary widely. A key feature can be holoprosencephaly, in which the brain does not divide fully into two halves. Other features include slow growth, delayed development, and facial differences such as clefts. Fingers, eyes, and genitals may be affected. Heart conditions have occasionally been reported. Signs begin during pregnancy or at birth.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Holoprosencephaly (brain not fully divided)
- Small head size (microcephaly)
- Cleft palate
- Seizures
- Low muscle tone (hypotonia)
- Small lower jaw (micrognathia)
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

- 2See a specialist
Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists.
- 3Ask which tests can help
Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
