Living with Distal monosomy 10p

A chromosome condition with a missing piece of chromosome 10 that can affect growth, learning, hearing, and facial features.

Understanding Distal monosomy 10p

Distal monosomy 10p is a chromosome condition in which a piece of the short arm of chromosome 10 is missing.

How it affects a person depends on the size and location of the missing piece. Features can include low birth weight, slow growth, developmental delay, low muscle tone, and trouble communicating. Birth defects, other medical problems, and distinctive facial features may also be present. Most of these deletions are not inherited and happen by chance, but some come from a parent's chromosome rearrangement.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Severe delays in overall development
  • Intellectual disability
  • Small head size (microcephaly)
  • Hearing loss
  • Short height
  • Heart or blood vessel differences

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
