Living with Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis

A rare condition affecting the spine, where ligaments along the spine harden, sometimes with mild back pain.

Understanding Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis is a rare bone condition that mainly affects the spine.

Ligaments alongside the spine harden (ossify), most in the lower chest area. Other features include bone spurs and thick skin on the palms and soles. People may have no symptoms or mild to moderate back pain. GARD lists onset in adulthood and notes no further descriptions in the medical literature since 1969.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Spine differences
  • Mild to moderate back pain
  • Degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis)
  • Thickened palms and soles
  • Differences in the pelvis bone
  • Obesity

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include bone and joint specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
