Living with Diffuse cerebral and cerebellar atrophy - intractable seizures - progressive microcephaly syndrome

A rare genetic brain condition with a small head from birth, seizures that are hard to treat, and profound developmental delay.

Understanding Diffuse cerebral and cerebellar atrophy - intractable seizures - progressive microcephaly syndrome

Diffuse cerebral and cerebellar atrophy-intractable seizures-progressive microcephaly syndrome is a rare genetic brain condition with a head that stays small from birth and severe seizures.

Seizures start from the newborn period to infancy and are hard to treat. Imaging shows loss of tissue in the cerebral cortex and cerebellum. Developmental delay is profound. Muscle tone can be low or high, and vision and eye movement problems can occur. Episodes of sudden extreme agitation may be brought on by serious illness.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Small head size (microcephaly)
  • Low muscle tone (hypotonia)
  • Hard-to-treat seizures
  • Profound developmental delay
  • Distinct facial features
  • Vision and eye movement problems

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, genetic specialists and seizure and epilepsy specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in QARS1 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Epilepsy Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
