Living with Diabetes mellitus, transient neonatal, 1

A type of diabetes in infants that usually fades by 18 months but can return later.

Understanding Diabetes mellitus, transient neonatal, 1

Diabetes mellitus, transient neonatal, 1 (6q24-related) is a type of diabetes in infants caused by too little insulin.

Babies are very small before birth. They have high blood sugar and dehydration, usually from the first week of life. Symptoms lessen over time and generally disappear between 3 and 18 months. Diabetes may return, especially during childhood illnesses or pregnancy. Up to half of people later develop permanent diabetes.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • High blood sugar in newborns
  • Dehydration
  • Slow growth before birth
  • Small for gestational age
  • Large tongue (macroglossia)
  • Belly-button hernia

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists and hormone specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
