Living with Developmental and/or epileptic encephalopathy with spike-wave activation in sleep

A rare childhood epilepsy with seizures, a distinct sleep EEG pattern, and loss of thinking skills.

Understanding Developmental and/or epileptic encephalopathy with spike-wave activation in sleep

Developmental and/or epileptic encephalopathy with spike-wave activation in sleep is a rare childhood epilepsy with seizures and loss of developmental skills.

It shows an EEG pattern called electrical status epilepticus in sleep (ESES) and loss of skills in at least two areas of development. It includes what used to be called epileptic encephalopathy with continuous spike-wave in sleep and atypical benign partial epilepsy. GARD lists onset in childhood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Several types of seizures
  • Atypical absence seizures
  • Tonic-clonic seizures
  • Problems with thinking skills
  • Intellectual disability
  • Loss of skills in development

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, genetic specialists and seizure and epilepsy specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in GRIN2A are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

GRIN2B Foundation and Epilepsy Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
