Living with DeSanto-Shinawi syndrome

A rare genetic syndrome with developmental delay, intellectual disability, low muscle tone, and behavior challenges.

Understanding DeSanto-Shinawi syndrome

DeSanto-Shinawi syndrome is a rare genetic condition that causes intellectual disability, developmental delay, and distinct facial features.

Other features include low muscle tone, behavior problems, vision and hearing differences, constipation, and feeding difficulties. Behavior is often marked by ADHD, but anxiety, aggressive outbursts, and autistic features can also occur. GARD lists onset in infancy or childhood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Developmental delay and intellectual disability
  • Absent speech
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Anxiety
  • Constipation
  • Vision differences

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
