Living with Deafness-hypogonadism syndrome

A rare genetic form of deafness with underactive sex glands and behavior differences.

Understanding Deafness-hypogonadism syndrome

Deafness-hypogonadism syndrome is a rare genetic condition with hearing loss from birth, underactive sex glands (hypogonadism), and behavior differences.

The hearing loss is mixed, meaning it has both conductive and inner ear causes. It is linked with a perilymphatic gusher, also called Gusher syndrome or DFN3. GARD lists onset in the newborn or infant period.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Progressive hearing loss
  • Delayed puberty
  • Underactive sex glands (hypogonadism)
  • Behavior differences
  • Slow bone maturation
  • Stapes (ear bone) stiffness

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include ear, nose, and throat specialists, genetic specialists, hormone specialists and urinary and male reproductive system specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Resolve: The National Infertility Association may keep lists of experts for this condition.
