Living with Cystic fibrosis-gastritis-megaloblastic anemia syndrome

A very rare genetic condition combining cystic fibrosis, stomach inflammation, a type of anemia, and intellectual disability.

Understanding Cystic fibrosis-gastritis-megaloblastic anemia syndrome

Cystic fibrosis-gastritis-megaloblastic anemia syndrome is a very rare genetic condition that combines several health problems.

It includes cystic fibrosis, stomach inflammation linked to Helicobacter pylori, a type of anemia from low folate, and intellectual disability. GARD lists onset in infancy. There have been no further descriptions in the medical literature since 1991.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Stomach inflammation (gastritis)
  • Megaloblastic anemia (large, immature red blood cells)
  • Intellectual disability
  • Diarrhea
  • Repeated breathing infections

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include digestive system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
