Living with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, sporadic

A rare brain disorder that usually appears later in life and runs a rapid course, affecting memory, behavior, and movement.

Understanding Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, sporadic

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare brain disorder that usually occurs later in life and runs a rapid course.

Early on, people may have failing memory, behavior changes, poor coordination, and vision problems. As it progresses, mental decline becomes severe, with uncontrolled movements, blindness, and weakness. It can be hard to diagnose because it looks like other forms of dementia, and confirming it requires testing a small sample of brain tissue. Most cases are sporadic, meaning the cause is unknown. About 5 to 10 percent are inherited (familial), and some are acquired through contact with infected brain tissue (iatrogenic) or by eating infected beef (variant CJD).

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Memory loss and confusion
  • Behavior changes
  • Poor coordination (ataxia)
  • Sudden muscle jerks (myoclonus)
  • Dementia
  • Visual hallucinations

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
