Living with Cortical dysplasia-focal epilepsy syndrome

A rare genetic brain development condition with early seizures, speech trouble, and intellectual disability.

Understanding Cortical dysplasia-focal epilepsy syndrome

Cortical dysplasia-focal epilepsy syndrome is a rare genetic condition of brain development that causes seizures and intellectual disability.

It causes moderate to severe intellectual disability and speech problems, with normal or mildly delayed movement skills. Seizures start early and are often joined by a loss of skills. Autistic behavior and repeated movements are common. It starts in infancy.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Seizures that start early
  • Severe intellectual disability
  • Delayed speech and language
  • Global developmental delay
  • Loss of skills (developmental regression)
  • Delayed walking

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, genetic specialists and seizure and epilepsy specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in CNTNAP2 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Pitt Hopkins Research Foundation and Epilepsy Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
