Living with Core binding factor acute myeloid leukemia

A form of blood cancer that starts in the bone marrow and lowers healthy blood cell counts.

Understanding Core binding factor acute myeloid leukemia

Core binding factor acute myeloid leukemia (CBF-AML) is one form of acute myeloid leukemia, a cancer of the bone marrow, where blood cells are made.

In acute myeloid leukemia, the bone marrow makes too many abnormal, immature white blood cells, which crowd out healthy blood cells. This leaves a shortage of all types of mature blood cells. Symptoms can include infections, tiredness, easy bruising, fever, and weight loss. Acute myeloid leukemia is generally a disease of older adults, but CBF-AML often begins in young adulthood and can occur in childhood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD's summary mentions these:

  • Frequent infections (low white blood cells)
  • Tiredness and weakness (anemia)
  • Easy bruising and bleeding (low platelets)
  • Fever
  • Weight loss

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Your doctor may refer you to a specialist who knows rare conditions.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
