Living with Congenital muscular dystrophy with intellectual disability

A rare genetic muscle condition with weakness from infancy, along with intellectual disability and brain differences.

Understanding Congenital muscular dystrophy with intellectual disability

Congenital muscular dystrophy with intellectual disability is a rare genetic muscle condition that also affects the brain.

It involves a problem with sugar chains on a muscle protein called alpha-dystroglycan. It ranges widely in how it shows up. Babies have low muscle tone and weakness, and movement skills are delayed or stop developing. Intellectual disability can be mild to severe, and brain scans can show differences. Feeding trouble, joint and spine changes, breathing problems, and eye problems can also occur.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Low muscle tone in infancy (floppy infant)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Delayed motor skills
  • Intellectual disability
  • Feeding difficulties
  • Tight joints (contractures)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
